Sprouted from a writer’s block that caused Gracie and Rachel to doubt their songwriting abilities after a lengthy tour, “Trust” blossomed into an empowered reflection on learning to speak your own language, believe in your instincts, and write your own narrative, regardless of any self-imposed walls your mind builds up.
Inspired by seeing heroes on their screens like Christine Blasey Ford and women of the #MeToo movement who were standing up and coming forward with their stories, the duo wanted to create a song that would empower those coming forward even when the odds are against them.
lyrics
Trust myself, no one else
But I got some doubts if I’m being honest
On a quest, no regrets
Gotta trust myself if I’m being honest
Times up, times out, a whisper becomes a shout
I will be heard I will say every word
Forget the way I was taught to behave
No need to forgive, all I gotta do is
Trust myself, no one else
But I got some doubts if I’m being honest
What a mess, all the stress
Thought I had the strength but I think I’ve lost it
Hold my breath, only yes
Gotta find the confidence but keep it modest
On a quest, no regrets
Gotta trust myself if I’m being honest
Turn up, tune in, a revolution will begin
Stand up, stand tall, attitude says it all
Must right what’s wrong, I won’t play along
No need to forgive, all I gotta do is
Trust myself, no one else
But I got some doubts if I’m being honest
What a mess, all the stress
Thought I had the strength but I think I’ve lost it
Hold my breath, only yes
Gotta find the confidence but keep it modest
On a quest, no regrets
Gotta trust myself if I’m being honest
Turn up the volume, I will not be quiet
Freedom’s around the corner, I know I can find it
Leave the indecision deciding who I am
Leave the hesitation, I think I should I think I can
Trust myself, no one else
But I got some doubts if I’m being honest
What a mess, all the stress
Thought I had the strength but I think I’ve lost it
Hold my breath, only yes
Gotta find the confidence but keep it modest
On a quest, no regrets
Gotta trust myself if I’m being honest

Gracie and Rachel press back on the boundaries of pop music, their catalog marked by hauntingly spare arrangements, bold,
baroque flourishes, evanescent vocal stylings, and penetrative lyrical tact, drawing wide-ranging acclaim from tastemakers. They’ve performed for NPR’s Tiny Desk and shared stages with the likes of Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, and most recently, Jesca Hoop....more
