about

This song was written in a really different way for us. During a moment of longing for connection and a frustration with an inability to reach it, Rachel began playing the piano and mumbling a melody. Then Gracie came in and translated Rachel’s stream-of-consciousness mumbles into words about longing and loss, about standing on the sidelines of yourself. Without communicating verbally, Rachel expressed her feelings through sound, Gracie articulated the way Rachel was feeling through lyric, and a song was born. Even when you don’t necessarily know how to say it out loud, feeling it can be enough, and maybe someone will hear you anyway.

lyrics

Standing on the sidelines of myself
Just watching everyone else
Who’s to say when I play
I got a jersey with no name

I’ll never be the one to say I want it when I want it when I want it
I’ll always be the one to say I can’t do what I can do
I’ll never be the one to say never say never say never
I’ll always be the one who wonders if always is always true

Waiting for a sign is a waste of time
When I can find one in my mind
Who’s to say where I should go
I got a heart looking for a home

I’ll never be the one to say I want it when I want it when I want it
I’ll always be the one to say I can’t do what I can do
I’ll never be the one to say never say never say never
I’ll always be the one who wonders if always is always true

I’ll never be the one to say I want it when I want it when I want it
I’ll always be the one to say I can’t do what I can do
I’ll never be the one to say never say never say never
I’ll always be the one who wonders if always is always true

Gracie and Rachel New York

Gracie and Rachel press back on the boundaries of pop music, their catalog marked by hauntingly spare arrangements, bold, baroque flourishes, evanescent vocal stylings, and penetrative lyrical tact, drawing wide-ranging acclaim from tastemakers. They’ve performed for NPR’s Tiny Desk and shared stages with the likes of Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, and most recently, Jesca Hoop. ... more
